If you’re keen to keep playing competitive golf through the autumn and winter then the Winter Challenge Men’s Pairs Competition is for you. It’s really easy to enter and take part.

The Winter Challenge is a Men’s Pairs Competition – so you’ll need a partner and you can contact Philip if you’d like help with that. There are nine Winter Challenge weekends from October to January, and each pair enters their best five scores from those nine weekends. You do not need to play in every one of the nine weekends, but obviously the more you enter the greater the chance of getting five good scores.

As usual the format for the Winter Challenge is “Better Ball Pairs Stableford” and you can see when the rounds are played both in your printed diary and on the website first tee calendar.

Better Ball Pairs
This is where two golfers play as a team.  Each golfer plays his or her own ball throughout. On each hole, the two golfers in a team compare scores, and the lower of the two net scores – the better ball – counts as the team’s score for that hole.

This is a scoring system where, rather than counting the total number of strokes taken, you score points based on your score against Par at each hole. Based on your net score (ie: your score with your handicap) each player scores one point for a net Bogey, two points for a Par, three points for a Birdie, four points for an Eagle and five points for an Albatross. Clearly the aim is to get as many points as possible.

The top 16 pairs
After the ninth round in January (the weekend of Saturday 26th) the top 16 pairs qualify for the next stage which is a matchplay knockout format.  To find the top 16, each pair adds up its five best scores (with the sixth best score as a tiebreak). Team 1 then plays 16, 2 plays 15, and so on.  More of that nearer the time.

How to enter
Just sign up in The Golf Reception when you play your first round, and then pay your entry fee each time you play.  You can see which weekends are Winter Challenge weekends in the first tee calendar or in your printed diary.
